You’ve just applied your Nail Wraps or your TrūShine Gel Enamel System – you’re feeling great and then BOOM something goes wrong! Here are 6 Reasons why:
1. You Didn’t Prep Your Nails Properly.
Improper prep can cause your nail wraps, lacquer or gel to lift or chip. In fact, it’s one of the most common factor for why your manicures don’t last. It is essential for your nails to be free of any oils, cuticles or other residue so the product can adhere to the nail bed.
Regardless of whether you use a plastic, wooden or metal cuticle pusher, be sure to only apply gentle pressure so you do not damage your nail. Dawn or any other de-greasing agent is essential for removing the oils and Jamberry has its own cuticle remover pen to help with removing the cuticle and other residue.
Cutting your cuticles is not recommended as it can lead to infections and accelerated cuticle regrowth.
2. You Skipped the Base Coat.
A lot of people think the base coat is an unnecessary extra step but they are wrong. Its like having the proper undergarments for your favorite outfit. Similarly, base coats are created to facilitate the product adhering to your nails. Next time you do a manicure, do some nails without and some nails with a base coat and see which one lasts longer and looks better.
Pro Tips: Make sure none of the base coat is touching your skin. If you get some on your skin, simply remove it before moving onto the next step. You also want to keep your base coat applications really thin. One coat is enough and if you make that layer too thick, you may actually be making it harder for the product to adhere. Remember, less is more.
3. You Applied Your Lacquer or Gel too Thickly.
As with the base coat, less is more. You want to make sure the product dries/cures evenly so that it will create a level and hard surface that will last for two weeks. In most cases you will want to apply at least two color coats so use three long, fluid strokes: one down the center of the nail and then one on each side. Steady your hand to get better and more even coverage. Make sure each coat is completely dry/cured before applying the next coat.
Pro Tips: Gently pull the skin on each side of the nail back to gain full access to the nail bed and ensure complete coverage with the lacquer or gel. I like to cure my TrūShine layers for 60 seconds, which is 15 seconds than the recommended 45 seconds.
4. You Didn’t Cap Your Tips.
When applying the lacquer or gel, you must cap your tips. Gel in particular shrinks when cured so it is important that the product covers the tip (but not underneath) so it does not shrink back.
As you apply the the lacquer or gel polish from the base to the tip (down the left side) and swipe at the tip toward the right. Repeat this from the base to the tip (of the right side) and swipe at the tip toward the left. One final brush down the center sweeping all of the way over the center of the tip.
5. You Over-filed or Over-Buffed Your Nails.
Excessive filing or buffing of your nails leaves the nail bed weak and thin, which in turn can affect how the product adheres to your nail. Your nail becomes much more flexible and when it bends, the product can fracture – leading to lifting and chipping.
6. You Didn’t Store Your Products Correctly.
Lacquer and gel have a shelf life. With proper storage you can significantly extend that shelf life. Keep all of your lids closed tightly and store your products in a cool, dry place. If you have noticed, the gel labels cover the container completely. The reason for this is that your gel should be kept away from sunlight. If exposed, the UV rays will cause the gel to begin to “cure”. Nail polish that has been sitting around a while will begin to thicken and the color will begin to separate.
Pro Tip: Your gels (particularly the glitter ones) need a good shake before application. In doing so, you will ensure the product has not settled and will get better and more even coverage. With the glitter gels, to get better coverage, you may want to “spread” the glitter by pushing it around the nail as opposed to swiping the nail.
Good luck with your manicure and I would love to hear what tips you have or how these tips have helped you with extending the life of your manicure!
